"ALPAMAYO: The Magnificent Mountain"
Join us for a special film evening on the above date exploring the climbing history of ALPAMAYO, one of the most celebrated peaks in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. “The Magnificent Mountain” was filmed during the 1966 British Expedition led by DENNIS GRAY ( former President of KMC), which completed the first full ascent of Alpamayo’s North Ridge to the true summit. Originally broadcast on ITV under the title of “THE MAGNIFICENT MOUNTAIN”, the film offers a remarkable contemporary record of the expedition and its ascent. This rare screening will be introduced by Karabiner MC Hon Member ( and past president) JIM GREGSON (also FRCC and Alpine Club) who will place the film in its historical context. Jim will recount some of Alpamayo’s chequered climbing history, including the early attempts on the mountain and the eventual first ascent. The film has a run time of approx 55 mins. Afterwards there should be an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.
