Yorkshire sport climbing

Daniel O'Brien

As part of the plan to teach Dan to “learn to love limestone” we will be visiting Stoney Bank in Yorkshire.

Described on UKC as “…a lovely setting, sheltered and sunny. A long neglected trad venue now transformed into a popular low to mid grade sport crag…”, by Rockfax as “…windy...” And by Steve as “…alright, yeah...” Stoney bank sounds just the job. There are loads of lower and mid grade sport routes for us to get our teeth into and even some trad for those so inclined.

Parking can be found on the road above Malham Cove and Goredale. From the centre of Malham, follow signs to Goredale but turn left as you exit the village (Malham Rakes turning into Tarn Road). Parking is available on the grass just beyond the large tree and cattle grid.

I intend to park up around 10am and head to High Stoney Bank where there is literally a route called Nicest so we’ll probably start there.

There are bird restrictions in place until 31st May so technically this would be the first day that those restrictions would be lifted (though they are often lifted sooner). In the unlikely event that they are still in place then we will move the meet elsewhere (likely Giggleswick).

Hope to see a few of you there!
