Cogne ice climbing

Adam McCudden

A week of winter climbing in and around the Cogne valley: The jewel in the crown of the Italian alps.  While there are a few WI2 routes and some non-committing single pitch crags to choose from, the lion’s share of routes in the valley are WI3-5 are committing in at least one aspect. As a result, if you would like to attend this meet, you should have appropriate experience to stay safe in a winter alpine environment. This included the following prerequisite experience: Competent with multipitch climbing and abseiling, winter walking/mountaineering skills, and comfortable climbing on axes at least WI3/M4/IV/D4.

As well as some of the world’s best ice climbing, Cogne valley also hosts a plenty of skiing, although skewed heavily to cross-country. While there are only 6 alpine slopes, there’s multiple cross-country loops from 1.5km to 45km. For those wanting a full day’s downhill skiing, Pila is less than an hours drive.

Accommodation is booked from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd February in apartments in Cogne. Most people will be flying from Manchester to Milan.
