NOT TO BE MISSED – climbing, scrambling and walking around Glencoe and Glen Etive according to taste. Stunning scenery, acres of rock and magnificent mountains. What’s not to like!

With more rock than you can shake a stick at, sample the delights of the Buachaille; Gearr Aonach; Aonach Dubh; Stob Coire nan Lochan; Bidean nam Bian or the unique Trilleachan (Etive) Slabs. Agag’s Groove (105m, VD); January Jigsaw (85m, S); Bludger’s Revelation (130m, HVS); Unicorn (125m, E1); Crypt Route (135m, VD); Spartan Slab (190m, VS); The Big Top (160m, E1) are a tiny taste of the many multi-starred routes available. Munros abound around Glencoe and Glen Etive and for a classic outing a traverse of the Aonach Eagach provides ‘… perhaps the finest and most difficult ridge scramble on the mainland’ (to quote my old guidebook) at 4km, Moderate!

There is no great master plan; we will make our choices when we’re there according to conditions and inclination. The options are fantastic whether for climbing, walking or scrambling. But don’t forget these are all mountain crags and serious hills so be prepared and equipped for all that entails.

I’ll be camping at Glencoe Mountain Resort; not far from the Kingshouse, on the edge of Rannoch Moor – see www.glencoemountain.co.uk. Cost is £6.00/person/night. It is well situated for Glencoe and Glen Etive. Mary and I are booked in from Thursday until Tuesday.

It is probably worth booking a pitch as soon as you can as it is a Bank Holiday. There is alternative camping at the Red Squirrel Campsite or Glencoe Camping & Caravanning Club Site at the other end of the Glen.
